Consumers Turn to Rental as Economic Slowdown Bites - Europcar Reveals Rise in Van Rentals

July 28th, 2008 by Europcar Communications

Europcar, the UK’s leading vehicle rental business and the largest supplier of vans for daily rental has revealed a marked 15% increase in van rentals to consumers year on year.  Whether it’s for a trip to the local dump, storage facilities, to collect or deliver online purchases, or for home moves, the rise in van rentals could be attributed to a growing ‘thriftiness’ amongst UK consumers as the credit crunch continues to bite.

To support this demand, Europcar has extended its fleet to include 50% more tail lifts – vital for the lone driver needing to transport items to or from home without help.  And to encourage safe driving, Europcar is offering its top tips for van driving:

Europcar’s Top Tips for Van Driving

Before starting your trip: ·

- Check your mirrors are all set correctly so that you can see as much as the road as possible.  - Ask someone to guide you out if you need to back out of a space. - Make sure the doors are securely locked at the back or on the side of the vehicle.

- Check with the rental company the height of the vehicle.

When out on the road:·

- Remember you will need a bigger braking distance as the vehicle will me much heavier than a normal car – so don’t get too close to the vehicle in front.

- You will need to take turns and corners much slower than you would in a car.

- Check your route for bridges and overpasses – you may find a route you use regularly in a car is no longer accessible due to the clearance height.

- Be aware of trees which may be overhanging the road.

- Ensure any loose loads are properly secured.

- Ensure that you signal well in advance of making a manoeuvre – and make changes slowly.

Catriona Lougher, Marketing Director for Europcar said: “With the slowdown in the economy, homeowners need to watch their pockets.  The increase in van rentals certainly seems to indicate a savvy attitude to this slowdown as consumers look for more cost-effective means to chuck out the chintz, do some home improvements or simply move unwanted furniture or belongings into storage.   Renting a van for a few hours is often far more cost-effective than having items delivered and with the popularity of sales on auction sites, it’s a great way to transport a ‘bargain’ home.”

Cramped and Cranky Kids? Take the Hassle Out of Summer Driving Europcar Offers Top Tips and Great Offers

July 22nd, 2008 by Europcar Communications

Parents facing the prospect of cramped and cranky kids in over-packed cars this summer are being urged to leave the family run around at home and rent instead. Europcar, the UK’s leading vehicle rental operator offers its top tips for keeping the kids happy in the car and believes parents should be taking advantage of all the benefits of rental in the UK to ensure both they and the kids have a stress free start to the holidays.

With up to half price rentals available from Europcar until 16th August* and nationwide delivery and collection to make rental easy for time-strapped parents, car rental not only provides a clean, reliable and spacious car that’s guaranteed to be less than 6 months old, but a safer journey too with less distraction from restless children.

Europcar’s Top Tips for Keeping the Kids Happy:

- Make sure small children are sitting high enough to see out of the window and that they are in suitable seating for their age. (Booster seats are available to purchase from selected airport locations)·

- Keep the car well-ventilated or rent a car with air conditioning.  This will make children more comfortable and can help avoid travel sickness.·

- Avoid heavy meals, particularly meals with a high fat content, before and during travel.  Keep snacks and drinks plain and encourage children to sip water rather than gulp it.

- Create a travel journal or make a map of where you are going to keep children interested in the journey and the landmarks they will see along the way.

- Consider travelling overnight so children can sleep through the journey or time journeys to coincide with naps for younger children.  Some families find an early morning start preferable.  Allow the children to sleep for a few hours in the car and then stop for breakfast when they wake.

- Allow for plenty of time for the journey and include frequent stops – this also gives mum and dad a chance to share the driving.

- Rent a bigger vehicle so that everyone is comfortable if you are at risk of having too much luggage.

- Avoid hand-held computer games if children are prone to car-sickness instead go for old favourites like I-Spy.  Also, take an old favourite toy and something new that the children have never seen before to keep them interested for longer.

Catriona Lougher, Consumer Marketing Director for Europcar said:  “Renting for holidays abroad is taken for granted but there’s much to be gained from renting at home as it really takes the hassle out of holiday preparations.”

“We all know how much rubbish a family car can collect, but with rental all cars come fully valeted and clean as a whistle. There are no worries over maintenance or road side assistance and you can even forget having to fuel up or refuel when you get back if you buy fuel inclusive rates.  With delivery and collection available, a car on average just 3 months old with plenty of room for all the family plus luggage will be delivered to your door.  And the fun of driving a nearly new car is all part of the experience!”

Cash conscious families choosing to stay in the UK this summer can take advantage of Europcar’s great summer promotion. *Rentals booked from 14th July to 16th August 2008 online at www.europcar.co.uk will be up to half price.  For example, a small car such as the Chevrolet Matiz 1.0 will cost from just £9.99 per day for a three day weekend rental.

UK BUSINESSES FACE GRIDLOCK 80% think congestion is getting worse according to Europcar survey

June 11th, 2008 by Europcar Communications

A survey of over 300 businesses by leading vehicle rental company, Europcar, has revealed the impact traffic congestion is having on an already struggling UK economy.  Over 70% of businesses said that congestion is impacting the effectiveness of their staff travelling for work and 80% said they felt that congestion on the UK’s roads is getting worse.

42% of respondents comprising fleet managers and travel managers from a range of business sectors estimated that as much as 20% of every business journey was spent in traffic congestion. A further 29% thought the situation was even worse, estimating that as much as 30% of every journey was time lost due to the sheer weight of traffic on the roads.

“Congestion is clearly having an impact on the nation’s economic profitability at a time when businesses are really under pressure to be as cost-effective and efficient as possible,” explains David McNeill, Corporate Sales Director, Europcar. “While significant investment has been made in our road network it simply isn’t enough and the jury’s still out on the Government’s plans for road pricing and High Occupancy Lanes on motorways.  But what is certain is that we drastically need better measures to ease congestion.  Anyone who has been trapped nose to tail on the M25 on a Friday afternoon can’t fail to agree with this view.”

“Certainly at Europcar we are working with customers to address some of these concerns, from identifying opportunities for staff to share journeys and cut fuel consumption to monitoring and managing better use of vehicles.  But what this survey has clearly shown is that we must all take responsibility to identify the ways in which we can reduce congestion on our over-stressed road network.  Challenging times lie ahead and the survivors will be those that tighten their belts and explore all the options to work as efficiently as possible.”
